On April 13th at the Parsippany Main Library, we held a Meet a Steminist program with conversationalist, civil engineer, and councilwoman Mrs. Judy Hernandez!

In our recent program, dove into environmental science to explore how our everyday water is clean. We discussed how utilizing STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics - we can treat filthy water as drinkable. This process is instrumental in ensuring the health and safety of those in our community!
We started this discussion by reading a part of "The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks," and learning the water we drink often originates from all of the water that falls from the rain and seeps into the groundwater supply.
However, as the students pointed out, the groundwater is extremely filthy and there is no way to be able to drink that. For this, Mrs. Hernandez brought out a fun, live demonstration to show how dirty water, filled with dirt and sticks, can turn into cleaner water by using a filter of sand, rocks, and a coffee filter.
Then to wrap up the program, we brought compostable, small pots and some soil for the students to be able to plant tomato seeds right at home in time for the summer season. With these, once the plant germinates from the soil, it can be planted directly into the ground or in a larger pot, ensuring tomatoes for days to come and promoting sustainability!

We want to give a big thanks to Mrs. Hernandez for spending the afternoon with us and coming to give her support! Be sure to stay tuned Steminists for future events we have in store!
