On March 9th at the Parsippany Main Library, we held our first and very successful Meet a Steminist program with Morris Hills math and computer science teacher, Mrs. Santucci!

In our recent program, we dived deep into the world of computer science. We discussed how computer science is a vital component of STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Understanding computer science is like unlocking the secrets behind all the technology we use, from computers to smartphones.
One of the most fascinating topics we explored was binary code. We learned how computers store data using just two digits: 1s and 0s. This binary system is the foundation of how computers process and understand information. It was mind-blowing to see how something so simple could be so powerful!
To put our newfound knowledge into practice, we had a hands-on activity where we made binary bracelets. Using beads to represent 1s and 0s, we encoded our initials into binary. It was a fun and creative way to visualize how computers store data. Plus, we ended up with some stylish accessories like the ones below!

Quotes from the Students:
"This is so cool!"
"I want to make a bracelet for my little sister too!"
"Can I please make another one, they are so much fun!"
"STEM means I can do anything!"
"My daughter loved learning about STEM!"
Want to try making your own binary bracelet or with your Little Steminist? We've got you covered! Download the worksheet below and follow the instructions to create your personalized binary bracelet. The black squares represent 0s and the white squares represent 1s. It's a great way to dive deeper into computer science while unleashing your creativity at home.

Mrs. Santucci, our STEM teacher, encouraged us to start delving into coding early. She recommended websites like code.org or hourofcode.org, where we can learn the basics of coding in a fun and interactive way. It's never too early to start learning about the exciting world of computer science!
We want to give a big thanks to Mrs. Santucci for being able to spend the afternoon with us! Be sure to stay tuned for upcoming programs both online and at the library. We have a lot in store and can't wait to share more exciting STEM adventures with you Steminists!
